iPad Setup: If incomplete during Orientation

WHY ALL THESE STEPS?

  • Drive sign-in –> Your digital documents will be stashed here.
  • Apple Mail –> Get used to checking your email regularly.
  • Notability –> Notability will automaticall backup any of your Notes and Docs to Drive, so they will be available from pretty much any internet-enabled device. The Format setting of PDF+Recording means you will be able to view/printout your docs.
  • Google Photos –> When you open up Google Photos, your pix and vids will automatically be backed up to Google Drive.

Backups are good. Ask any teacher.
  • Apple ID –> Mandatory as of this year. See Mr. Rule for details.

Here is how to complete your iPad setup, in case things went awry during Orientation:

Join your home wifi network.
Settings app –> WiFi.

Sign in to Google Drive.
Use your MDS email address and password.

Click on the Apple Mail icon.
Choose the GOOGLE option, and sign in
[it might not ask you to].
Make all the sliders green, then Save.

Start up Notability.

After the “ad” screens, click on the gear icon, bottom left corner.

Click ICLOUD BACKUP –> Turn it OFF.

Click on AUTOBACKUP, then select GOOGLE DRIVE.

Click FORMAT, and select PDF+RECORDING.

Find GOOGLE PHOTOS [not “Photos”].

If it asks you to backup as “you” –> YES.
YOUR decision on Original Quality vs Space Saver.

If it does NOT ask you to backup:

  • Find Settings [probably icon on the top right]
  • Click “Backup and Sync”
  • Make sure the slider is ON [ it should be slid to the right.]

Sign into your AppleID [Settings –> Top left column]

If the AppleID info you were given at Orientation is not working, OR you have no idea what your password / AppleID email is –> send Mr. Rule an email asking for a reset AppleID password..

You will receive an email from Apple with your new temporary password. Remember that what it calls “Current Password” is your TEMPORARY password.

Make sure your iPad is ready

Make sure you got all of these tasks completed on your iPad – believe me, it will save you some hassles down the road!

ONE: Connected to the correct network [MDS-student or MDS-middle]. Look at Settings -> WiFi

TWO: Signed into Drive [use your MDS email address and password].

THREE: Notability backing up to Drive automagically. [Fire up notability, Click the Gear icon, then AutoBackup. Select “Google Drive” and get logged in. THEN select PDF+Recording as the format.]

FOUR: Email setup. [Fire up email, select Google as the account type, and log in using your MDS email address and password. Remember that your MDS email is mds#####@mountdesales.net.]

FIVE: AppleID setup – this is a bit more complicated because we are in a campuswide transition.

  • IF you have a regular AppleID [that you setup yourself – primarily Upper school students]:
    • Then your AppleiD is your MDS email and MDS password – OR whatever you set it to. If you can’t remember, click the “I forgot”: or “Password Reset” link and follow the instructions.
    • If you are getting a message saying your password has expired, please let Mr. Rule know at the ipad email address. [ipad@……]
  • IF you have a “managed AppleID” – middle school students:
    • ….and yours is already setup, then you login with your MDS email address and PROBABLY your MDS password. Some students have a variant on your MDS password for the AppleID – your teacher has access to that information.
    • ….and you have never setup your AppleID, then there is a “temp” password available.

Regular AppleID accounts allow you to sue Find My iPad to locate your ipad, and have 5gigs of online storage. Managed AppleID accounts allow you to login to the shared iPads in the middle school, AND have 200gig of online Cloud storage.

Both allow you to access your data and use apps like Keynote, Numbers, etc. at iCloud.com

Got a new iPhone for Christmas? Some things to do before using it

….or even AFTER using it! These tips are from an article on cnet.com.

  1. Clean out your old phone – delete unwanted apps and photos, for example. Then backup your old phone to iCloud. That’s going to make it MUCH easier to setup your new device.
  2. If you are moving from Android to IOS, Apple has an app caled “Move to IOS” in your app store. Install it on your Android device – it will also save you a lot of headaches.
  3. Learn about Gestures, which are used to navigate and use the phone. CLICK HERE for a cnet article – complete with animations – that explains what’s available in IOS13.
  4. Setup FaceID – the feature that uses your face to unlock the phone. It’s a concept that’s been around a while – Windows Surfaces have been using this type of thing for several years. CLICK HERE to learn more about FaceID from cnet.
  5. Spend some time getting to know your new device. On campus we call it “playing” – off campus we call it “research”. Either way, spend the time just exploring. CLICK HERE for a good article about the new features. CLICK HERE for an article about some hidden gems – features you may not know exist.
  6. Make sure you have the Find My service setup and turned on. [Settings –> AppleID section on the top left.]
  7. Elsewhere on this site is an article with some suggested Privacy settings. You don’t want Apple to know ALL your business, now, do you?
  8. Did you know you can record your screen? That’s also true of many of the iPads on campus.
