IOS 9 Battery – get more day out of your iPad!

Here are some tips to make your iPad battery last longer – and make it easier to keep track of your battery.

THE BEST TIP IS
PLUG THE THING IN AT NIGHT
WHEN YOU GO TO BED!

Just make a habit of it!

Enable Low Power Mode

When your device reaches 20% battery life, iOS 9 will alert you to turn on Low Power Mode, which will turn off automatic mail fetches, background app updates, and other systemwide toggles in order to help you get a few extra hours of battery life.

Low Power Mode will remain on (though you can turn if off at any time) until the device has been charged to at least 80% battery life.

  • Settings —> Battery
Enable the toggle for Low Power Mode.

The battery indicator in the status bar will turn yellow, showing that you are in Low Power Mode.

Get detailed power usage for each app

Sometimes you may want to know what apps are using the most battery life on your devices so you can tweak your usage habits whenever you’re in a low-powered environment. With iOS 9, you can see exactly what apps have been eating your battery life by following these steps.

Settings –> Battery –> Battery Usage
Select either Last 24 Hours or Last 6 Days, and then select the clock icon.

Turn off Background App Refresh

Settings –>General —> Background App Refresh

No connection to Wi-Fi – Access Denied

If your subscription to the wireless network has expired [it does this every 30 days] AND you have tried to login but keep getting the “access denied error” [a BIG RED BAR across the top where you tried to login], try this:

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi (Under settings) and WAIT 15 SECONDS (yes, you have to count).

  2. Turn Wi-Fi back on and select the MDS-Student network.  Wait until you see that network showing next to Wi-Fi on the left.
  3. Load safari and go to www.cnn.com or hamsandwichtees.com or untuxable.com– at this time you will be prompted for your logon/password. After you login and receive a message that you are able to use the network, close that screen.

  4. For a double-check, go to mail and make sure you have a connection – either swipe down for new messages or try to compose a message to yourself as a test.

Reason you lost connectivity????????

Meraki (a software that runs in the background – not an app you regularly use – and our wireless network) requires the user (you) to login to reauthenticate  each 30-45 days.  This application is one of many that keeps our digital system working well for our users and keeps others out of our digital system.

Find my iPad – how to use

If you have lost or misplaced your iPad, here’s how to use “Find my iPad” to figure out where it is.

This only works if

  • you have correctly setup your AppleID on your iPad
  • Turned Find my iPad ON in Settings–>iCloud
  • Followed these instructions on some settings
  • AND it is on and near a wi-fi network

1. Open a web browser and surf over to www.iCloud.com – OR you can use the “Find My iPhone” app if someone has installed it on their device.

2. Login with your MDS AppleID and password.

Notice you can also have the device make a sound [it sounds like a sci-fi submarine, and is quite loud], and mark it as lost. Please do not Erase the Device if you are using an MDS iPad.

In general the screen will tell you where the iPad is within about 50 feet if it is on campus.
