ePub texts – how to read
You might run across an ePub book. How do you read it?
[NOTE: We haven’t had a chance to test out these on our machines, so your mileage may vary. Please let me know what works or doesn’t work! Send an email to trule@ etc etc]
iPads / Kindle
Both of these should automatically open up the file – the iPad in iBooks, the Kindle in an ePub reader. Please let tech know if they don’t.
Windows machines
- First, try just doubleclicking the file after downloading it. You might already have a reader installed.
- Use the Firefox web browser, and install the addon at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/epubreader/
- http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/top-4-free-epub-reader-software/ has a list of some possibilities. Try one – if it doesn’t work, uninstall it and try another.
- There have been some good reviews of Calibre – down it at http://calibre-ebook.com/download

Kahoot – surveys and such
Kahoot! is an online-based quiz/survey thing [a la Socrative, Hands Up, etc], but this one forces the participants to be focused on the front of the room [i.e. they aren’t looking down at their device reading the questions because all they have to do is click the color or shape].
It has Surveys, Quizzes, and Discussions. Questions can be timed from 5 to 120 seconds, and you have an option for it to automatically move on to the next question [when time runs out OR everyone has answered] OR it will wait for you to click.
You can also add graphics to accompany a question.
Kahoot works with just about anything with a web browser and internet access – i.e. cell phones, Kindles, iPads.
