“There’s not enough room to update to 8”

  1. Check other apps that might be taking up room.
  2. Music – delete it all.
  3. Photo Stream – turn it off. That takes up room.
  4. Google apps – Docs, Sheets, Drive all have an option to access a file offline. Make sure there are no files stored locally. Find the “On Device” menu item to see the list.
  5. Got any iMovies you’ve been working on? Delete ’em if you are done with them,.
  6. What about other apps that allow you create documents – Splice, Educreations, etc. Those all take up room.
If none of those work, you’ll have to wait until I pull them in later this month.

IOS 8 – YES you can update!

After some [NON-thorough] testing, it looks like OS 8 will work OK on our setups here at MDS.

Here are the “gotchas”:

  • You MUST have 5.9 gigs of space available on your ipad.
Check it in the Settings App –> General –> About –> Available
  • Don’t have enough? Move your pictures and videos to your Google drive.
Fire up the Drive app, click the plus sign [top right], and upload FROM the Camera roll. Once you are certain they have been uploaded [doublecheck!], then go to the Camera app, access the camera roll, and delete the files.
  • You will have to update off campus. Plan on it taking a while- maybe an hour.

Kindle App – setup

Students – you will be receiving [if you haven’t already received it!] an email with your kindle account information.

Here is how to setup the Kindle app on your iPad.

IF YOU HAVE NEVER SET UP THE KINDLE APP BEFORE:

• Open up the app. You should see this screen:

Kindle start

• Type in the account info given to you in the email, and login.

• You might have to click the “sync” button, at the bottom of the screen, to get the material to download:

IF YOU ALREADY SETUP YOUR KINDLE APP WITH A DIFFERENT ACCOUNT:

You will have to “deregister” the app. This will NOT delete whatever you have purchased from Amazon – those items are still “in the cloud”, inside your Amazon account. They will just disappear from your iPad. Here’s how:

• Fire up the Kindle App.

• Click the Settings icon:

settings kindle icons

•  Click “Update”, next to your email address:

settings kindle

•  Then click the “Deregister” button.

You should be taken to the beginning screen, where you can add your MDS kindle account information.
