Those Facebook Challenges? Not a good idea.

“Games can often extract sensitive information about a person, such as their first job, their first car, or their mother’s maiden name.

Oversharing on social media threatens your online security, warns Dan Lin.

“We cannot go out and socialize during this pandemic, so people are turning to social media to share what is going on with their lives,” says Lin, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science, and director of the I-Privacy Laboratory at the College of Engineering at the University of Missouri. “But it can be risky.”

Before a person decides to play along with the latest social media challenge, or post a picture of their family home, Lin says to consider the following three things:”

Before turning in your iPad: A checklist

Things to do before gathering up the parts:

Missing either? DO NOT go out and buy one. We’ll send you a bill, which will be cheaper than you buying it. ESPECIALLY do not go to the convenience store or Ollie’s and pick a cheapie. They pose a serious risk to the iPad due to cheap components that can fry your iPad. Seriously.

Things to bring to your turnin session:

  • Your iPad
  • Cable
  • Charger Block
  • Tape a note to your iPad [SAVE TIME!]
    • Your name
    • Grade just completed
    • MDS number
    • Make a note if the screen is cracked, or if anything is missing

Questions Answered:

What if my cable or charger ore missing?

We’ll send you a bill. See above paragraph.

What if my cable or charger are damaged?

Turn them in. You’ll be in the clear. Send an email to The iPad Guy if you’d like to know the thinking here.

When and where do I turn in my stuff?

Check your email. That schedule has or will be sent out. iPad turnin will happen in the ARC.

What might I be charged for?

Typically we charge for

  • Missing parts [cable, charger block]
  • A case that is damaged beyond reasonable wear and tear. [Yes, we have stories…..]
  • Cracked screen [Note that sometimes we don’t catch the cracked screen until later, as we are organizing the iPads. In that case we will contact you.]
  • An iPad that shows obvious mistreatment [For example, a bent iPad. Yes, it has happened. yes, it was weird.]

Making sure you can connect: Google Meet

With Google Meet there is an option to use a Shortcut. This stays the same from session to session and makes it easy for everyone to get into the class.

HOWEVER: the shortcuts only work if you are CURRENTLY logged into your MDS Google account on that device. If you are not, the session can’t be found.

How to make sure you are logged in correctly:

Desktop/Laptop:

On a web browser pointed to meet.google.com, loot at the top right corner of the window.

If you see an icon with your initial [or something similar], then you are logged in. Click the icon to see what account you are logged into.

Top right corner of the screen. Click the icon to see which account you are logged into.

If you are NOT logged in, then you should see a “signin” link at the top right.

Click the “Signin” link and …..er….. signin.

iPad or other device

On the iPad app, click the “hamburger menu” [three horizontal lines] at the top left. At the top there should be something which indicates which account is logged in, if any.

Clicking there will allow you to log into a different google account.

[You can have multiple google accounts to switch between.]

BOTTOM LINE:

Do not use a slight difficulty getting into the class as an excuse. You have multiple ways to get into the class. Use them all, and as always, stay in touch with your teacher.
